Photos from Dad's Memorial Dedication

On August 16th, 2008, the day before what would have been my father's 59th birthday, a bench and a tree in Golden Lake Park Circle's neighborhood park were dedicated to Dad's struggle to keep a gravel pit out of the land that borders the neighborhood. The slide show in this post contains some of the pictures from the dedication and party. The slide show should start automatically for you, but you can also click on any of the photos to go directly to the online album.

It was a beautiful day, and it was terrific to share in some of the things that Dad loved most: friends and family, classic cars, food, and the neighborhood.

Just another weekend in Old Town

Last weekend I went to the Irish Festival in Waterfront Park in Old Town (a pleasant mile walk from our apartment) as well as the Friendship Firehouse Festival (on the way to the water front). The Friendship Firehouse is really neat, and I didn't know about it before Saturday (sorry to all those who have already visited us, you will have to visit again to see this place). More information about the fire house can be found at their web page:
http://oha.alexandriava.gov/friendship/
Apparently, though, the John Muir mentioned in the history of the firehouse is not the John Muir, environmentalist and Scottish immigrant whose family settled in Wisconsin. Muir seems to have been a popular Scottish last name....

I also visited Grape + Bean (http://www.grapeandbean.com/), now famous from a Washington Post article:

I had the Kuta mention in the article--both iced and hot. (This demonstrates my love of comparing tastes. I preferred the iced, but that may have had to do with walking around in the heat all morning). I also bought an organic Malbec from Chile, and a bottle of Bavarian Wit. How can Starbucks beat that?

Then on Sunday, I went house hunting in Del Ray--the next little area over from Old Town (just for fun) and geocaching (even more fun!) with friends. I think the picture of me is hilarious. I have such a look of focus! (We didn't find that one, though.)
